3 - Jurassic Park news roundup

Jurassic Park news roundup

So, something strange happened this week: we actually got some JP news! Here we go:

Producer Frank Marshall spoke about JPIV

He didn't really said anything new, but at least he spoke about it. Those news spread around the usual cinema sites, people comment, and the JP franchise is once again a conversation topic. That's good, even if we didn't really got any positive news. You can read the article here.

JP 2009 Toys pictures

JPToys.com got a lot of pictures from the new line of JP toys. Of course I'm happy with this line, but I find the dinosaurs way too colourful, and that's a trend that I have noticed in the more recent paleoart... personally I don't enjoy it that much. You can see all of them here and here.

JP is among Yvonne Strahovski's favourite movies

Beauty and the geek. Some people don’t see why Sarah would find Chuck (Zachary Levi) attractive, but Strahovski understands the nerdy guy’s appeal.

It’s only fitting that her major credit is a genre series, not only because the actress is an SF fan who likes “ALIEN movies and JURASSIC PARK,” but also because it’s part of her upbringing.
Well, this isn't really something new (the article is from April!), but it's new to me, at least. I've never seen someone famous talking about JP before, so I decided to share. And it's not just someone, it's the female star of the tv series Chuck. Go on and read the full article here.

The world outside Jurassic Park

Primeval tv series has been axed

Love it or not, it was a way to see dinosaurs on our tv. However, we still have the future Warner Bros movie to look forward to, and the production team said that they have "every intention of keeping Primeval alive in other ways". I wonder if that means new novels...

I've read only one Primeval novel (The Lost Island), and I did enjoy it. Since the series ended with a cliffhanger, that would be a good way to solve it. Plus, they could do stuff that the tv budget didn't allow.

You can read the news here.

MonsterQuest - The Last Dinosaur

The title pretty much says it: this episode will focus on a dinosaur. I haven't seen it, but I hope to. The episode site is here.

1/10 T.rex skeleton

Go on and see it by yourself here! It's worth it!

And this was this week edition of JP-RL! Hope you enjoy it, and stay tuned for next week edition!

2 - Jurassic Park in Empire magazine

Jurassic Park in Empire magazine

As you probably know, last thursday was the "birthday", so to speak, of Jurassic Park. It is a special day for all of us, JP fans.

However, this particular month is also notable because of the 20th anniversary of the Empire magazine.

Being a cinema magazine, Empire was with us when Jurassic Park first came out...

Lucky for us, Empire has online two fine essays about JP. Here's an excerpt from the first one, by Colin Kennedy...

Behavioural movement, breathing, pupil dilation: Spielberg wanted to capture the detail which suggests a living, thinking organism rather than a mere monster. Eventually, all of this detail would end up on screen: the T-Rex eyes blinking in the flashlight, the velociraptor breath snorting against the kitchen door port-hole, the odd, nodding head movement of the poisonous dilophosaurus.

... and an excerpt from the second one, by Andrew Collins...

It's even tempting to read a Spielberg allegory into the story: after all, just as John Hammond (Attenborough) has graduated from flea circus to safari park, Spielberg has graduated from temperamental mechanical shark to Industrial Light And Magic — but the difference is, Hammond's dream goes sour and Spielberg's dream works.

Then TWL was released, and once again Empire was with us:

You can also find online an interesting essay regarding TLW, by Anna Smith:

Firstly, JP2 was a much darker, more brooding affair than its predecessor, in which good guys died and literal armies of bad men — not just the rogue few — marched around meddling with nature. This was not simply a rehashing of the same old formula.

Unfortunately, they don't have a cover nor an essay featuring JP///. But hey, I'm grateful for all the attention they gave already to our favorite franchise!

So, this month's Empire is a special edition, to celebrate its 20 years... and to do so, they did a portfolio with a lot of actors and actresses in some of their most memorable characters.

And guess what? Sam Neill is featured, as Alan Grant, along with our beloved rex!

Great, right? What an unexpected gift for all JP fans, right now, when JP also makes sixteen years!

I really love this picture... First, it features Grant, with the flare and the rex. This is part of my childhood, and to see it recreated again, in such an artistic way, is really amazing.

Second, it is great to see Sam Neill among so many famous actors and actresses, right where he belongs. Sometimes I feel that he doesn't have all the attention and respect that he deserves.

Third, it's quite meaningful that this portfolio features JP among so many others famous films. JP still remains to this day as one of the most emblematic movies ever, and it's good to see that it is recognized.

I can only be happy for this unexpected surprise by Empire, and hope that they'll give a cover and a couple of essays to JPIV, when it comes out!

By the way, you can see the whole portfolio here!

The world outside Jurassic Park

As you may have noticed, a movie called "Land of the Lost" has just been released. Why is this noteworthy? Because this movie features dinosaurs!

This movie is based in a children's television series from the 70s, with the same title. You can find more about it here, but right now I'll give you the original intro, for you to take a walk through memory lane...

Now, you can take a look at the trailer for the movie, just to have an ideia of what to expect from it...

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I definitely intend to see it... I mean, it has dinosaurs, of course I want to see it!

You can find lots of reviews around the web, but I'd like to call you attention to a "review" made by paleontologist Thomas Holtz. It's more of an interview, actually. Anyway, go ahead and enjoy Land of Improbable Dinosaur Pee!

"A beautiful, but deadly addition to Jurassic Park"

Ok, so these upgrades are not deadly, but they may prove particulary useful...

- Blogroll

Now you have a reason to visit us everyday, instead of just showing up every weekend for your weekly dose of JP. Right now, the blogroll (which you can find on your right) features almost thirty sources of paleontology and JP news, always up to date!

How does it work? It's quite simple, actually... the blogroll is constantly monitoring all those sites, and everytime a new post is made, it will appear in it. Please note that we aren't responsible for the content and that the process is fully automatic (spared no expenses!), so you have to thank the various bloggers that make this possible!

So, visit us everyday, and you'll be sure to be up-to-date with all the buzz in the paleontological and JP communities! And if you have your own blog, or know of some other blog that isn't already featured, please let us know!

- JP-RL goes social!

JP-RL now has a Twitter account which you can follow if you have your own twitter; we'll keep you constantly updated with paleontological and JP news, as well as warn you once your weekly dose of JP is released!

JP-RL is also on Facebook. Be our friend, and while you're in it, join the Get Jurassic Park 4 Into Production group, a jurassicparkiv.org initiative. And our congratulations right now go to Joshua, for being our first Facebook friend!

- Links list

A small list of JP links as been added to the site. Right now it only features the more famous sites, but it will be improved as time goes by!

And that's it! Hope you enjoyed being with us, and don't forget to return next weekend for another dose of Jurassic Park!

1 - WE WANT IV Campaign!

And indeed we want!

A campaign based on the selling of merchandise of a hypothetical fourth JP movie has just started, thanks to the work of two of the most notable JP fans: Jack De La Mare and Razzie.

Here's the campaign aim:

It has been a long 8 years since the previous film, and since any real activeness happening in the franchise. The campaign will mainly sell merchandise, directed at anybody (or any dogs) that want to see the fourth movie made. It's a good way of raising awareness about the film to others, as well as the film producers.

The campaign will run until the movie is released, which may be quite a few years. Overtime there will be competitions to win prizes from the merchandise line and other Jurassic Park related items.

I'm really happy with this ideia, since it is indeed a good way to raise awareness to the demand of a fourth film by the fans. Although I don't really love the design, since it feels more like a horror/terror feel than a JP feel, I'll be glad to join in and buy some stuff! After all, it's JP stuff!

And heck, why not a "We want IV, V and VI" campaing?!

Here they are, the links:

- the campaign

- the JP Legacy thread

- Jack De La Mare site

- Razzie's site

The aim of Jurassic Park - Research Lab is to provide the JP fan with a post regarding the JP universe every weekend.

It can be a simple essay about a particular aspect of JP, it could be the sharing of some impressive fan art, or it can be something entirely different. However, the purpose remains the same: to give the fandom something to keep the JP alive on a regular basis.

Enjoy it, and join us every weekend!
